GeoZigBee: A Wireless GPS Wristwatch Tracking Solution

Sathish kumar.R, Vengadapathiraj.M

GeoZigBee is a low-power GPS tracking device that is being developed by NAVSYS under contract to the US Army. This device uses a client/server approach to send GPS geolocation data to the LocatorNet server through a wireless data link. By remoting the GPS signal processing across a wireless network, the GPS power drain is minimized allowing the GeoZigBee device to operate for extended periods of time. When integrated with an external data link, the GeoZigBee device can operate for over one year providing a position fix every 10 minutes using a small lithium ion battery. When using the internal ZigBee® data link, the GeoZigBee device can operate for a period of over 30 days from the same battery. The LocatorNet server includes a Software Defined Radio that has been design to process the GeoZigBee data. This is integrated with a Web Portal to allow display and dissemination of the GeoZigBee device locations across the network. This paper discusses the GeoZigBee system architecture and includes test results showing the system performance. Applications of the GeoZigBee device include tracking patients during clinical trials, tracking children, Alzheimer’s patients, parolees, pets, or tracking assets.
